Healthy Holidays: Caring for Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

12/17/2025

The holiday season can bring both joy and stress. Between family gatherings, travel, and routine changes, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

Throughout the season, it's essential to protect your mental health and check in with yourself. Using simple tips like setting boundaries, taking time for rest, and staying connected with loved ones can help make for a healthier, more joyful holiday season.

Setting Boundaries

For some families, the holiday season can bring many expectations and demands. It is crucial to set boundaries to maintain a peaceful, stress-free holiday season.

Before the holiday season begins, identify what matters most to you and learn to say "no" when people expect too much. For example, it is okay to deny invitations to holiday gatherings and not overwork yourself by attending too many events.

Some other tips to help you set boundaries include:

  • Clear communication: Express how you feel to friends and family so they can understand the importance of protecting your mental health.
  • Establish self-care routines and personal time: Spending too much time around others during the holidays can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Set aside personal time and don't neglect your self-care routine.

Taking Time for Rest

Holiday travel, commitments, and family gatherings can leave you running on empty throughout the holiday season. Changes to your routine (including nutrition and sleep) can also leave you worn down.

Taking time for rest can help you maintain better mental, emotional, and physical health throughout the season. Some simple tips to prioritize rest include:

  • Aim for a regular sleep schedule: Sleep is a key factor in your overall health. Try to stay on a consistent sleep schedule whenever possible.
  • Disconnect from work: If you're working, use PTO and time off to take a break during the holiday season.
  • Exercise: Cold weather can make it difficult to get regular exercise outside. Try walking indoors at local tracks or malls, or on a treadmill. Gentle exercise is important to clear your mind.
  • Calm your mind: Find activities that help you calm your mind, such as playing Sudoku or crossword puzzles, or reading a book at the end of the day to unwind.

Staying Connected With Loved Ones

Many people are so busy during the holiday season that they often get preoccupied and forget to connect with those who matter the most. Staying in touch with loved ones through video chats and phone calls can help you feel closer, even to those who live far away.

Prioritizing Mental and Emotional Health

This holiday season, remember the importance of maintaining good emotional health as part of your overall health. The holiday season should not cause you immense stress or despair. Instead, it should be a joyous, relaxed time of year. Care for your mind and body this holiday season for a healthy holiday season.

Experiencing sadness or loneliness during the holiday season can feel isolating. You're not alone. If your sadness and loneliness extend beyond the holiday season, seek help. Find a location near you to find a provider who can lend a helping hand.
